Given recent events, I can not sit silently.
As I think is obvious to almost everyone at this point, I stand with law enforcement personnel across the country in condemning brutal actions by police officers in Minneapolis. The officers’ actions were violent, inhumane, and counter to policing best practices. No one in our country should ever fear for their life when they are non-violently interacting with law enforcement. This behavior is never, ever acceptable.
But me stating this can never bring George Floyd or many others back to their family and friends. My heart aches for the Floyd family and I am tremendously grateful for their grace in this process.
I also understand the huge outpouring of rage and grief that we are witnessing. And for the millions of folks that feel like they are missing out on the “greatness” of this country, I understand.
I stand with the people of America in saying that we have had enough! I am tired, we are tired, of politicians who ignore the plight of many and protect the status quo. Of leaders that are more interested in scoring points on social media than serving their people. In this country, we demand more. And that is why I'm running for office. This isn't partisan. This is American. We simply cannot continue to stand by as so many are prevented from living the lives we all should be able to as Americans.
Let us not burn down our own cities in this process.
So many of us feel desperate to have our leaders listen. So I hope leaders will finally join with me in listening, in acting boldly, in standing up for change.
Change will happen, but it can come without fire and it can come without blood. We need boldness, we need accountability, we need leadership. And that's what I will provide in Congress.
But today, I am just a humble American citizen, proud of my country and ready to serve. I hope, no, I know, that we can do better. So let’s look to and listen to each other and grow as a nation. Enough words though- it’s time for action. Not just today, not just tomorrow, but action until these injustices end.
Thank you and be safe.
